IUD Complications

IUD complications are a big issue for the women who suffer through them. While the IUD has many benefits including the peace of mind of not forgetting to take a pill every day, and the very small chance of pregnancy during use, there are some problems that arise from the IUD which can be highly unpleasant and very harmful to a woman's health.

One possible problem arising from an IUD is rejection. Since an IUD is a foreign object, your body will most likely recognize this and can try to push it out. This in turn can cause muscle cramps and spasms that are very similar to a menstrual period, but can be much more intense due to the fact that your body is trying to rid it of a foreign object. This may also cause fever or flu like symptoms. If this happens, you should see a doctor immediately to rule out infection.

It is rare but possible that a woman who has an IUD inserted get an infection. This is a rare occurrence and there are factors that may contribute to this problem, including the state of the woman's immune system at the time of insertion. Women with certain immune disorders should have an in depth consultation with their doctor in order to determine if an IUD is safe for them.

Another possible problem arising from an IUD is that it may cause irregular bleeding and possibly anemia. This is quite rare, but possible. Many women report having heavier than usual menstrual periods for the first few months the IUD is in place, but eventually a period may dwindle and become non-existent.

It is possible that a woman with an IUD in place become pregnant. Statistics show that the likelihood of this happening is less than many other birth control methods, possibly due to the fact that there is no need to remember taking a pill on a regular basis.

In most cases the IUD is a safe method of birth control. Whether or not the IUD is right for you will depend on several factors. You should speak with your health care provider to decide if you are a good candidate for an IUD. Many women like the IUD because it prevents pregnancy for a long period of time and there is no need to change it or take anything for it, provided it stays in place and does not cause any problems.
